Thomas Miller established the Robin Travis Scholarship programme in 1992 in memory of Robin Travis, a former Director of Thomas Miller who died suddenly and prematurely in 1991. He had a long association with the German Members of the transport clubs managed by Thomas Miller, correspondents and brokers. There have been thirteen scholars so far and it is intended that there will be an opportunity for another scholar to join the programme in London in 2011.
The scholarship provides a three month internship for a motivated individual working in Germany currently employed in the shipping, transport or insurance sector. The scholar will spend about 6 weeks in the Head Office of Thomas Miller in London and the remainder of the time in selected businesses tailored to the individual, such as lawyers, surveyors or insurance brokers.
The invitation to apply for the 2011 scholarship can be found here.
The deadline for registering interest in this year's scholarship is the end of May. Full applications must be submitted by 14 June. These applications will require a curriculum vitae (CV), two commercial references and a covering letter from the applicant explaining why he or she should be considered for the award.
Interviews of certain candidates are likely to be held in Hamburg in July with a view to the scholar commencing in September. The actual timing of the commencement and length of the scholarship can be discussed.
Further information can be found on the UK P&I website.
The fourteenth Robin Travers Scholarship has been awarded to Mr Michael Wiegemann of Hamburg Sud.
A graduate of the Hamburg Süd apprenticeship scheme as well as a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, Michael works in the insurance and management systems department of Hamburg Süd. Michael takes up the three month scholarship in London in mid September. He will spend about six weeks in the London office of Thomas Miller and the remainder of the time in selected businesses tailored to the individual, such as lawyers, surveyors or insurance brokers.
