Andrew was ITIM's Claims director and has been with ITIC since its foundation in 1992. Previously he had been employed by one of ITIC's predecessors, CISBACLUB. Andrew has a huge wealth of knowledge regarding all claims faced by ITIC’s members. Andrew also found time to write and he regularly contributed to articles on legal issues in industry publications and Andrew is the author of “Shipbrokers and the Law” LLP (1999). We wish Andrew a long and happy retirement.
How long have you worked at ITIC?
I joined ITIC at its formation in 1992. I became the Claims director in 2005.
What is the most memorable claim you have handled?
It is difficult to choose an individual claim. There have been a number of claims when ITIC has defended members against completely ridiculous allegations. As part of ITIC's 25 anniversary we chose our top three of these claims: https://www.itic-insure.com/our-publications/claims-review/25-years-of-claims-140672/
While remembering those ridiculous cases still brings a smile to my face it has been more rewarding to quietly and privately settle matters when the member's liability is an issue. If I had to choose one case it would however be a debt collection. ITIC's member was a shipbroker who found purchasers for a couple of vessels but the sellers refused to pay the commission. The seller's defence completely collapsed mid-trial and they agreed to pay the commission in full together with interest and the legal costs.
What will you miss the most?
It has to be my colleagues - I have worked with many of ITIC's crew for a very long time. I retire with lots of good memories of time spent with colleagues in different places all over the world.
What will you be doing with your time after you leave ITIC?
I will be doing some work as a volunteer for a UK based animal charity. I will continue to attend ice hockey matches passing judgment on players of a game I never played (and when I can't really skate).
Any life ambitions or future goals still to achieve.?
Working out why the ice hockey players don't listen to me. I hope to see the GB team play in the IIHF World Championship in Finland in May 2022.
